GOD-GIVEN AUTHORITY TO THE CHURCH

By David P. Ward

Ephesians 1:3

Amplified Bible (AMP)

3May blessing (praise, laudation, and eulogy) be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) Who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual (given by the Holy Spirit) blessing in the heavenly realm!

1. This is a GOD-GIVEN AUTHORITY for the whole Body of Christ. Every SPIRITUAL BLESSING has already been given to the Church!

2. It is possible to be born again, a child of God, and not know the authority that every believer has already been given.

a. Have you ever hid some money away and forgot about it? There could have been times when you needed the money you hid away, but you went without it instead. This is what happens when we don’t understand the reality of the power of the NAME OF JESUS.

3. Every believer has inherited the right to use THE NAME OF JESUS against Satan and his cohorts.

4. Satan does everything he can to keep the believer from the KNOWLEDGE of TRUTH.

a. Satan doesn’t even mind you going to Church, as long as you don’t comprehend the power of theNAME OF JESUS, the power of THE BLOOD OF JESUS, and the power of THE WORD OF GOD.

b. Satan can no longer opress the Body of Christ when they understand their authority they have against the Kingdom of darkness.

John 8:32

Amplified Bible (AMP)

32And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free.

Luke 10:19

19Behold, I give unto you power (exousia) to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power (dunamis) of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

(exousia) = authority, ability

(dunamis) = inherent power, or power stored up within

a. Christians have this inherent power, and Satan has a from of inherent power. If it weren’t so, Jesus would have never said he did.

b. Jesus said, His Disciples had authority over the ability of the devil and that nothing shall by any means hurt us.

c. Some Christians would say, “well, that’s not true, I knew Sister Gertrude and she was robbed. I knew Brother Doo-dad and he died of cancer.” That may be true. Bad thing can happen to good Christians. That just means that exousia was not exercised somewhere.

d. Jesus said to His disciples, “You shall receive power (dunamis=dune-nam‘-miss) after the Holy Ghost comes upon you.” (Acts 1:8)

Acts 1:8

8But ye shall receive power(dunamis), after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Acts 10:38

38How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power(dunamis): who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

a. Notice Peter preaching tells us that sickness is an oppression of Satan, not God!

Colossians 1:13

13Who hath delivered us from the power(exousia) of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

a. Jesus delivered us from the exousia of darkness and has transferred us into the Kingdom of His dear Son! That is not in the future. That is for us now!

5. In the above verse, Jesus is speaking. He used 2 different Greek words in this verse.

What is exousia? (eggs-zoo-see-a)

Let us use an example here of what exousia is, and what it does. Picture a policeman at a traffic light that stopped working. He gets in the middle of the road hold up his hand and commands the cars and trucks to stop. Think about the weight of those large 18 wheelers or freight trucks. There is no way the strength of the Policeman can stop the truck. The truck has more POWER (dunamis) than the man holding up his hand. Really, what could this one man do amongst so many cars and trucks? He has a POWER (exousia) that has been invested in him by the Government! First, the local government stand behind the policeman. He is acting on behalf of the authority that has been invested in him and the drivers of those vehicles know and recognize his authority.

1. Authority is delegated power.

Ephesians 6:10

10Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

a. This scripture doesn’t tell anyone to be strong in themselves. We are to be strong in the Lord!

2. What would you do if you saw a policeman try to hold a car back in his own strength, dunamis? The policemen couldn’t prevail over the weight of the vehicle. Neither can YOU as a person engage with Satan in your own strength and win! How can you defeat an enemy that is invisible?

3. Law enforcement officers are strong in the AUTHORITY that is given to them. Policemen operate IN THE NAME, or on behalf of the government.

4. As a Christian, you are to operate in the NAME OF JESUS.

5. IN JESUS NAME you have a right to say NO to Satan! You say NO to his strategies! NO to sickness. NO to disease. NO to poverty. NO to strife. NO to fear!

6. Ever been taking a walk and an annoying dog starts following you nipping at your heels? You might politely say to the doggie, “ you shew now! Go away!” And the little doggie persists. You keep walking, and finally you have had enough and you turn around, stomp your feet, and holler, ‘GET!” The dog didn’t respond till he knew you meant it! Sometimes that is how we need to get with the devil!

1 Peter 5:8-9

8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

9Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

1 Peter 5:8-9

Amplified Bible (AMP)

8Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour.

9Withstand him; be firm in faith [against his onset--rooted, established, strong, immovable, and determined], knowing that the same (identical) sufferings are appointed to your brotherhood (the whole body of Christians) throughout the world.

a. Sober = a right mental attitude

b. “seeking whom he may devour” = you don’t have to be devoured! Satan only devours the Christian if they aren’t resisting him

c. resist stedfast in the faith = we must learn to resist the devil. We do this by exercising our authority in the name of Jesus. We have a right to resist the enemy.

d. God, Himself is the source behind your strength!

John 1:12

12But as many as received him, to them gave he power(exousia) to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

a. Did you comprehend what was just said? Jesus gave you the right to become a son of the living God!

Matthew 7:29

King James Version (KJV)

29For he taught them as one having authority (exousia), and not as the scribes.

a. No more wimpy preachers! Preach with the authority Jesus has given you! Teach with the authority Jesus has given you!

Mark 1:27

27And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority(exousia) commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.

Luke 4:32

32And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power(exousia).

a. instead of people falling asleep on you while you are teaching, get His anointing on your teaching and people will be amazed in what you are teaching instead of being bored!

Luke 9:1

1Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power(dunamis) and authority (exousia) over all devils, and to cure diseases.

a. Here again we see the Bible clearly tells us that Jesus delegated His spiritual authority to His disciples and told them to cast out devils and to heal the sick in His name.

Mark 3:15

15And to have power(exousia) to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:

Matthew 9:6

6But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power(exousia) on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.

Matthew 10:1

1And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power(exousia) against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

Mark 6:7

7And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power(exousia) over unclean spirits;

Matthew 28:18-20

18And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power(exousia) is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

19Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

20Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world (age). Amen.

a. The Great Commission of the Church is based upon delegated authority. Jesus said exousia was given to Him, and now He gave it to the Church!

b. Jesus Christ transferred that authority to the Church. He ascended on high and is the Head of the Church. We are His Body operating on the earth.

Observe = teaching people to stick with the Word until they see a harvest!

7. The authority possessed by the believer is a power so much GREATER than Satan and his cohorts. Demons know if you know who you are in Christ!

Ephesians 1:20-22

20Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,

21Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

22And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

Ephesians 2:5-6

5Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

6And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

a. Jesus Christ has already done this! Jesus is seated at the right hand of God the Father, the place where all authority has been given from. The Bible says that we are seated with Him.

b. We died with Jesus and were raised with Him.

1 John 4:4

4Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

a. “he that is in the world” is the god of this world, Satan. Satan being the head of the principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world system.

Ephesians 1:1-7

Amplified Bible (AMP)

Ephesians 1

1PAUL, AN apostle (special messenger) of Christ Jesus (the Messiah), by the divine will (the purpose and the choice of God) to the saints (the consecrated, set-apart ones) at Ephesus who are also faithful and loyal and steadfast in Christ Jesus:

2May grace (God's unmerited favor) and spiritual peace [which means peace with God and harmony, unity, and undisturbedness] be yours from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

3May blessing (praise, laudation, and eulogy) be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) Who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual (given by the Holy Spirit) blessing in the heavenly realm!

4Even as [in His love] He chose us [actually picked us out for Himself as His own] in Christ before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy (consecrated and set apart for Him) and blameless in His sight, even above reproach, before Him in love.

5For He foreordained us (destined us, planned in love for us) to be adopted (revealed) as His own children through Jesus Christ, in accordance with the purpose of His will [because it pleased Him and was His kind intent]--

6[So that we might be] to the praise and the commendation of His glorious grace (favor and mercy), which He so freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.

7In Him we have redemption (deliverance and salvation) through His blood, the remission (forgiveness) of our offenses (shortcomings and trespasses), in accordance with the riches and the generosity of His gracious favor,

a. The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead was opposed by the tremendous powers(exousia) of the air. Satan and his cohorts endeavored to defeat the plan of Go, but Jesus Christ arose! He ascended and is seated and the right hand of God the Father.

b. Satan’s powers were baffled and overthrown by our Lord Jesus Christ.

c. This exousia released a total triumph over the enemy in the power of the resurrection. The Hoy Spirit wanted us to know what happened the day Jesus was raised from the dead!

Ephesians 1:21

The Message (MSG)

20-23All this energy issues from Christ: God raised him from death and set him on a throne in deep heaven, in charge of running the universe, everything from galaxies to governments, no name and no power exempt from his rule. And not just for the time being, but forever. He is in charge of it all, has the final word on everything. At the center of all this, Christ rules the church. The church, you see, is not peripheral to the world; the world is peripheral to the church. The church is Christ's body, in which he speaks and acts, by which he fills everything with his presence.

a. Jesus Christ was preparing a throne and a Heavenly ministry for all of those who would overcome by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.
