Is the spirit and the soul the same?

I think one of the most wonderful revelations I have ever received was the revelation that we are a three part being. It was a foggy subject growing up. Nobody seemed to know the difference in the church I grew up in. They didn’t know at home either. Spirit and soul was used interchangeably. Then I went to a Bible School that told me what the Word of God had to say on the subject! It’s so good to know the Bible truly has the answers to all of our questions. We just need good mentors that will help us with revelation knowledge.

Spirit and soul are not the same thing.

We are a spirit, we have a soul, and we live in a body. Let’s do our best to define the three dimensions of man.

The spirit of man. This is the “real you.” The part of you that will live forever; an eternal spirit. When you receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior, this is the part of you that is instantly changed. You don’t have to imagine what your spirit man looks like. He looks just like you! That’s why when we get to heaven we will recognize each other. People who choose to go to hell will recognize people they know there too. One good point to make here is that your spirit will live forever, and, you don’t have to go to hell… Jesus Christ has already paid for the punishment of our sin. Accept Him today as your Lord and Savior! (see the prayer at the end of this book and email me and let me know if you prayed the Prayer of Salvation)

The Bible speaks of the Christian having his nature changed from darkness to light. Paul called it becoming a “new creation.”(2 Corinthians 5:17)

2 Corinthians 5:17 (Amplified Bible)

Amplified Bible (AMP)

17Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!

The old sinful nature is gone and we take on a new nature after God! The spirit of man is instantly changed when we are born again and ask Jesus to be our Lord and Savior. Too simple? Get over it… I am so glad our Heavenly Father loved us so much that He sent His only begotten Son to die on the Cross for mankind so that we

could have eternal life. This is what we call the reality of the new creation. There is

no way any man can get the glory and say he obtained eternal life on his own merits.

Just because you are born again, doesn’t mean you won’t slip up once in awhile and say or do something really stupid. You can be born again and be angry, hateful, have a dirty thought, or say something really ugly. This doesn’t men you have to get saved all over again. Your spirit is still alive unto God and you don’t lose your salvation when you sin. Sin does separate us from God, but, we don’t have to get saved again. Just repent. What happens when we sin is we break fellowship with the Lord. Our relationship never changes.

As a Christian, instead of trying to get saved again, confess 1 John 1:9 from your heart and say it out of your mouth that you are sorry for your sin. Pray this next verse out loud:

1 John 1:9 (Amplified Bible)

9If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins [dismiss our lawlessness] and [continuously] cleanse us from all unrighteousness [everything not in conformity to His will in purpose, thought, and action].

The soul of man. This is your mind, your will, and your emotions. This is also your intellect. You would be surprised of all the Scriptures that talk about the mind. I’m not talking about the Christian Science doctrine. I am talking about what the Bible says about the soul of man. The soul is our thinking process and determines how we look at things, how we perceive things. The human mind is wonderfully made by God. It just needs to think in line with how God thinks about things. Does that sound strange to you? Stay with me and I will share more Scriptures with you concerning the soul of man later in this book.

The body of man. This is the outer “earth suit.” The body gives us full expression on this earth. Your body has a voice! This is the part of man that has strong cravings and it’s senses can bring you to a place of confusion and sin if left unchecked. As a Christian, we can learn to train our bodies to be after the presence of God! Once you are born again, you have a choice to be led by the Holy Spirit, or, you can be ruled by your flesh (senses). There is nothing wrong with listening to your body, so long as when the voice of your body is telling you contrary to what God’s Word says; you need to choose to listen to the voice of your recreated spirit.

The Apostle Paul said Christians who are led by the cravings of their body are carnal, or body ruled. We have to choose to be governed by the Spirit of God who lives within us.

1 Thessalonians 5:23

23And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

This is one of my favorite verses that show man is a three part being! It is the power of the blood of Jesus that preserves us blameless and will keep us until the coming of the Lord. Nothing compares to knowing the “God of peace.”

Hebrews 4:12

12For the word of God is quick (alive) , and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Only the Word of God alive on the inside of us has the power to separate the soul from the spirit of man. The joints are of the soul as the marrow is of the spirit of man. When we begin to renew our minds to the Word of God, it becomes a discerner of the thoughts we have toward everything. It can then separate the intents of the heart, which is the voice of the recreated human spirit.

9-11But if God himself has taken up residence in your life, you can hardly be thinking more of yourself than of him. Anyone, of course, who has not welcomed this invisible but clearly present God, the Spirit of Christ, won't know what we're talking about. But for you who welcome him, in whom he dwells—even though you still experience all the limitations of sin—you yourself experience life on God's terms. It stands to reason, doesn't it, that if the alive-and-present God who raised Jesus from the dead moves into your life, he'll do the same thing in you that he did in Jesus, bringing you alive to himself? When God lives and breathes in you (and he does, as surely as he did in Jesus), you are delivered from that dead life. With his Spirit living in you, your body will be as alive as Christ's!

This translation of this verse in The Message Version I think is so much clearer than the King James version. Think of it. The God of the Universe comes to take up residence within you! Paul says, if you don’t know God in this way then you just won’t know what we are talking about… Are you experiencing life on God’s terms? Read the above verse again. I promise you will get something different out of the verse every time you read it!

When the Spirit of God comes to live on the inside of you, you begin to understand that your spirit man is changed to a divine nature, yet your soul, your mind, will, emotions, and intellect need to be changed! When you become born again, by asking Jesus Christ to forgive you of your sin and you accept him as your Lord and Savior, you are instantly changed in your spirit! The soul, or your mind, it changes in a process…. Mind renewal is a process… If you are not taught this, you will want to try and get saved over and over again by answering every other altar call.

Your salvation is not based upon a feeling!

Proverbs 20:27

27The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

God’s candle on the inside of you is your spirit! God’s light in you is your spirit! Not your soul. The soul receives light when it is continually submersed in the Word of God.

Psalm 119:130

130The entrance of thy words giveth light(divine information); it giveth understanding unto the simple(even those less gifted)

6-8Long ago I promised the ancestors of Israel that I would give this land to their descendants. So be strong and brave! Be careful to do everything my servant Moses taught you. Never stop reading The Book of the Law [a] he gave you. Day and night you must think about what it says. If you obey it completely, you and Israel will be able to take this

Joshua 1:8 (King James Version)

8This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according

to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

When I begin to study God’s Word, The Word is so powerful it goes to my inner man, my spirit, and I begin to feed upon that Word by thinking about the Word, and then muttering the Word, like a cow chewing his cud! Eat the Word of God, and then spit it back up again by thinking about what God’s Word says. The Bible is so powerful that it will change your way of thinking . The Bible tells us that we can have the mind of Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:9)

Think about what it says! That’s what the Psalmist David was talking about when he said, “Selah.” Mutter the Word of God. Say what God says about you and renew your mind to the Word of God.

When I am born again, I need a steady diet of the Word of God so that I can receive strength in my spirit man.

1 Peter 2:2

2As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

3 John 2

2Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

Soul prosperity is learning to meditate on the promises of God. The Word causes us to grow spiritually, even as a baby begins to grow on milk.. When I am born again, I am just like a new born baby. I am complete. I am whole. Yet, I need to grow up from babyhood, to childhood, and then into manhood. The spirit of man is changed into a new creation once you receive that born again experience. You still need to grow up spiritually. You do that by feasting on the Word of God daily.

Matthew 4:4 (New International Version)

New International Version (NIV)

4Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'[a]"

Peter said “desire the sincere milk of the Word.”

Jesus said, “not on bread alone.”

The soul and spirit of man need a daily intake of God’s Word as much as we need a daily intake of natural food. Sunday only Christianity doesn’t work. Especially if the sermon is dried toast. A lot of time our soul has everything but the Word of God floating around on the inside of us. Believe it or not, a lot of you are in the shape you are in spiritually because you keep hanging out in dead churches where the sermon puts you to sleep.

Psalm 34:8

8O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

Consume the promises of God! When God’s Word is taught by anointed teachers, you will be excited about learning Scripture! Restore your soul!

Jeremiah 15:16 (Amplified Bible)

16Your words were found, and I ate them; and Your words were to me a joy and the rejoicing of my heart, for I am called by Your name, O Lord God of hosts.

For every need in your life, there is a promise of God in the Scriptures to meet that need. A promise for every need. I’m not talking about listening to some dead old sermon out of the Reader’s Digest once a week on Sunday morning! When the Word of God is preached under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, it has the ability to change you from the inside out. That is why the teaching of Spirit, Soul, and Body is so important. As a babe in Christ, you need to be fed on the sincere milk of the Word. Sincere means the milk that is not watered down! It still has its full nutrients with all the cream!

Romans 12:1-3 (King James Version)

1I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed(metamorphosis) by the renewing of your mind, that ye may

prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

3For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

The soul of man needs to be renewed to its thinking. We are a product of words and opinions of our Moms and Dads. We were shaped many times by wrong thinking. Products of our environment. Our attitudes began to shape early in life about other races, political views, and society even before we could understand thoroughly why we believed what we believe. If your parents, or grandparents were teaching you what their parents taught them about life; you most likely have a lot of the same views and attitudes that they carried. If you are a republican, most likely your parents were republican. If you are a democrat, chances are those who raised you are also democrats. Until something changed your way of thinking, as you began to grow and some outside source shaped your thinking away from the views of how you were raised.

Your soul is where your thinking process begins, and, where your opinions are formed. Without the Word of God preached and taught to you in its fullness; you most likely will have the views of your inner family circle.

How was it possible for me to be conformed to this world system? I listened to the views of Grandma, my Momma and Daddy. I listened to those around me that I respected in life and digested their views on religion, dating, war, sex, and whatever counted in life. Their way of thinking affected me greatly. Maybe you were blessed enough to grow up in a Christian home where they spoke the Word of God to you on a daily basis.

Maybe you heard the truth of God’s Word about:

* abundant life is available to you (John 10:10)

* the authority we have in Jesus name, (Luke 10:19, John 14:13)

* that God’s favor and blessing could be upon you (Ruth 2:13, Psalm 5:12)

* that my prayers can have tremendous power available (James 5:16)

* that you were in right standing with God by the blood of Jesus (Romans 5:1)

* that no strategy of the devil could prosper against you (Isaiah 54:17)

* that I don’t have to be afraid (1 Timothy 1:7)

* that everything I put my hands to would prosper (Deuteronomy 28:12)

* that God has given His angels charge over me (Psalm 91:11, Hebrews 1:14)

* that I can live a long life (Psalm 91:16)

* that I don’t have to be sick (1 Peter 2:24, Psalm 107:20, Isaiah 53:4,5)

Are these Scriptures foreign to you? If they are, you are eating the dry morsels I was talking about. Soul prosperity will not come on dry morsels…

Ephesians 1:17 (Amplified Bible)

17[For I always pray to] the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation [of insight into mysteries and secrets] in the [deep and intimate] knowledge of Him,

What a prayer Paul had prayed to the church of Ephesus. The greek says a spirit of wisdom, not the spirit of wisdom. What’s the difference? My spirit can be full of wisdom. My spirit can be full of revelation. This word wisdom here is from the word, sophia. Sophia means, “a broader scope of what’s happening behind the scene.”

My spirit can know things sometimes my head doesn’t know. Some call it a “hunch” or an “intuition.” I call it a spirit of wisdom. This is my spirit hearing from God. That still small voice will lead you. It will keep you from getting into wrong relationships. Your spirit will keep you from making bad business decisions. Your spirit will even keep you from accidents.

Having a spirit of revelation is allowing the Holy Spirit to open the Word of God to you so that you can understand the Bible. The verses in the Bible come alive to you and no longer confuse you. The Holy Spirit enlightens your understanding in what you are reading.

John 4:24 (The Message)

The Message (MSG)

23-24"It's who you are and the way you live that count before God. Your worship must engage your spirit in the pursuit of truth. That's the kind of people the Father is out looking for: those who are simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship. God is sheer being itself—Spirit. Those who worship him must do it out of their very being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration."

Jesus said true worship comes from the spirit of man. If you are going to worship God, do it in spirit (pneuma) and truth. We get our English word, “pneumatic” as in “pneumatic tires” from this koine Greek word. Of course, we see it as “air” in a tire. Translated “air” or “wind.” The Greek is a little deeper than just “air.” It could be closer translated from our word, “attitude.” You could also use our English word, aura or demeanor. Jesus said to worship “in spirit and in truth. Worship from

the heart, with the right attitude.

Jesus talked about those who had a “wrong spirit.” What is your spirit like?

Ephesians 4:23-24

23And be renewed in the spirit (pnuema, attitude) of your mind;

24And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

The above Scripture tells you to get it together in your attitude by putting on the new man. This truly becomes a whole new way of thinking. Your Daddy might have told you that you wouldn’t ever amount to anything, but the Word of God says you are more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:37)

Say this out loud:

*I am a spirit. (the real me)

*I have a soul. (my mind, will, and emotions)

*And I live in a body. (my earth suit)

*My spirit is the real me. The part of me that changed when I was born again.

*My soul is being restored to the Word of God. My soul, my mind is being renewed to the Word of God.

*I present my body a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God. My body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.

16-20There's more to sex than mere skin on skin. Sex is as much spiritual mystery as physical fact. As written in Scripture, "The two become one." Since we want to become spiritually one with the Master, we must not pursue the kind of sex that avoids commitment and intimacy, leaving us more lonely than ever—the kind of sex that can

never "become one." There is a sense in which sexual sins are different from all others. In sexual sin we violate the sacredness of our own bodies, these bodies that were made for God-given and God-modeled love, for "becoming one" with another. Or didn't you realize that your body is a sacred place, the place of the Holy Spirit? Don't you see that you can't live however you please, squandering what God paid such a high price for? The physical part of you is not some piece of property belonging to the spiritual part of you. God owns the whole works.’

Read the above verses again. Sex is so much more than just “skin on skin.” Amazing verses… Sex without a commitment or intimacy leaves us feeling lonelier than ever. Our bodies were made for God-given love. Our bodies are a place where the Holy Spirit can come to reside. God owns all of us; spirit, soul, and body.

Romans 12:1-3 (Amplified Bible)

1I APPEAL to you therefore, brethren, and beg of you in view of [all] the mercies of God, to make a decisive dedication of your bodies [presenting all your members and faculties] as a living sacrifice, holy (devoted, consecrated) and well pleasing to God, which is your reasonable (rational, intelligent) service and spiritual worship.

2Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].

3For by the grace (unmerited favor of God) given to me I warn everyone among you not to estimate and think of himself more highly than he ought [not to have an exaggerated opinion of his own importance], but to rate his ability with sober judgment, each according to the degree of faith apportioned by God to him.

Dare to confess what God’s Word says about you! Don’t buy the lie that you are just some backslidden buzzard who will never amount to anything! Refuse Satan whispering in your ear that your life isn’t worth living! Feed upon the promises of God every day and confess out loud what God says about you.

Spirit, soul, and body you can live life to the fullest! (John 10:10)

Spirit, soul and body you can be preserved blameless! (1Thesolonians 5:23)

Philippians 4:7-8 (Amplified Bible)

7And God's peace [shall be yours, that [a]tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall [b]garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

8For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them].

Every day of my life I can chose to dedicate myself to the Lord, spirit, soul, and body. I choose to think on things that are true and lovely, kind and gracious. I refuse to carry bitterness and unforgiveness in my heart. I will fix my mind on what the Bible says I can do.

Make the Scriptures a part of you daily routine! Constantly be aware of the still small voice on the inside of you. In the days ahead many will be afraid and confused in what will happen in the earth. You can stand strong on the promises of God as a Believer that God will never leave you or forsake you. His angels are available to protect you.

Practice the presence of God. Constantly remind yourself that you are a three part being, made in the image of God, and know that your spirit is alive unto God because you know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. You can trust the voice of your recreated human spirit.

As you spend time meditating in the Word of God, your soul is being transformed into the mind of Christ. You can be a disciple of the Word and love to learn His principles and precepts. You are presenting your body as a living sacrifice to the Lord every day and will do the works He has called you to!

25 But the truly happy people are those who carefully study God's perfect law that makes people free, and they continue to study it. They do not forget what they heard, but they obey what God's teaching says. Those who do this will be made happy.

The Bible says that if you study God’s Word, and don’t forget it, you will be happy! True happiness comes from :

1) Being alive unto by being born again. (Romans 10:9-10)

2) Studying the Word of God continually which will renew your mind (soul). (2 Timothy 3:16)

3) Use your body to glorify God. (1 Corinthians 6:19)

The most important decision you will ever make in this life is to become a child of God by receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. The following is a prayer I have in the back of all of my books. I encourage you to pray this prayer out loud, right now, if you are not certain you are ready to meet Jesus in the air when the trumpet sounds in the rapture of the Church! Then, after you pray this prayer, email me so our Ministry can help you find a good Church for you to get involved in, immediately!

This could be the most important prayer you will ever pray…

Father, I believe in my heart that Jesus Christ is Your Son and that He was crucified, buried, and resurrected, to pay the price in full so I can live victoriously over sin, sickness, and poverty (both spiritual and natural), and spiritual death.

Jesus, I confess You as my Savior and Lord. I Thank You that I am saved. I now become a new creation and I become righteous in You. Old things have passed away and all things become new (see 2 Corinthians 5:17, 21).

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for empowering me with Your Spirit so I can live an overcoming, abundant life and become a bold witness of You!

Today my new life begins in You, Lord Jesus. Thank You!
