Poimen (Pastor)

By Daivid P. Ward

Pastor, shepherd, feed

1 Peter 5:1-4

1The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:

2Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;

3Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being examples to the flock.

4And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

1 Peter 5:2 translates this word to be feed as there is no way to separate true pastoring and the ability to feed the flock of God in which the office of Pastor has the divine right and responsibility to care and protect the sheep.

a) This ministry office is held by the Head of the Church as Jesus is called the “Chief Shepherd (Poimen) in the epistle of Peter.

1 Peter 2:25 25For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherdand Bishop(episkopas #7) of your souls.

b) poimen means to guide as well as to feed. A true Pastorhas the heart to tend to the sheep of his pasture.

Ephesians 4:11

 11And he (Jesus) gave some, apostles (apostolos #22); and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

c) It is Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church, that gave Office of Poimen to the Church to equip them and cause them to grow up spiritually.

John 10:11 - “…I am the good Shepherd

Hebrews 13:20 - “… that great Shepherd of the sheep…”
