Prophecy & Prophets
By David P. Ward
What if my Church doesnŐt believe in the gift of prophecy or prophets?
Just a few years ago the Lord had put on my heart to start writing down the prophetic events concerning the future as He gave them to me. It was the Spring of 2005 when our ministry began The Prophetic Voice Newsletter. I had no idea at the time how the newsletter would touch so many lives. I encourage you to go back and take the time to read them as many of the prophecies that were given have already come true.
I sense in my heart that I am still Ňin the pits,Ó or what I refer to as ŇProphet In Training.Ó Even though the prophetic has been misused and abused over the last few years does not validate throwing prophecy away as many Christians have done. It is scary when you think of the ministers out there that have tried to use their gifting to build their own kingdoms by prophesying money, land, and material possessions from well meaning people. God will deal with those men. Through all of the heresy, deception and what seems to be a spiritual circus, the scriptures tell us not to despise prophesying. I do believe that is on every level of prophesy.

19-22Don't suppress the Spirit, and don't stifle those who have a word from the Master. On the other hand, don't be gullible. Check out everything, and keep only what's good. Throw out anything tainted with evil.

20Do not spurn the gifts and utterances of the prophets [do not depreciate prophetic revelations nor despise inspired instruction or exhortation or warning].
The scriptures tell us not to be gullible. We all know you canŐt believe everything you hear on Oprah, on the news channels, or what Hollywood actors tell you about God, or how they perceive truth. I remember Kenneth Hagin used to say concerning spiritual things, Ňeat the hay and leave the sticks.Ó (referring to an old cow)
No matter what anybody says, our final authority will always be the written word of God.
* The Bible does not contradict itself.
* The Bible is GodŐs holy word and never changes.
* The Bible will outlast every king and kingdom of the earth.
* The Bible is the expressed will of God for every man and should be taken literally.
The above two translations of 1 Thessalonians 5:20 are amazing. Read them again. Paul speaks of prophecy as:
1) a word from the Master
2) gifts and utterances of the prophets
3) prophetic revelations
4) inspired instruction
You have read the Bible for yourself. It is plain and simple. God speaks through men and gives them utterances, revelations, instruction, exhortation, and warnings. I donŐt care if your denomination preaches or teaches against believing in men seeing the future, the Bible says there are those out there that can. There are things coming into the earth that the Lord wants to reveal to you to get you ready for what is coming into the earth. Make a decision in your heart today that you will not despise the prophetic, but you will with an open heart receive the five fold ministry (Ephesians 4:11) into your life.
