The Seven Last Sayings of Jesus

By David P. Ward

There is power in the Lord’s Supper. Communion is more than a tradition. Jesus meant for the time of partaking of the elements of bread and the fruit of the vine to be supernatural.

In this study, we will look at the seven last sayings of Jesus when He was hanging on the cross for all mankind.

Each phrase was recorded for a purpose. Each word that came from the mouth of Our Savior came from the core of His being. Every time Jesus spoke out, His words carried a message of proclamation, of purpose, and of Covenant.

The Seven last sayings of Jesus came from His spirit, soul, and body.

Father forgive them, for they know not what they do (Luke 23:34).

At this particular time, the very heart of Jesus was exposed to all those standing there. Including the soldiers who had put the nails in His hands, the soldiers who had whipped Him beyond recognition with “a cat of nine tails.” What Jesus chose to do at this very moment was His decision to show mercy. His decision not to call the Warrior Angels out of Heaven to rescue Him. He had the authority as the Son of God to do so. It was His decision. He chose to forgive.

Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise (Luke 23:43).

All the way to the end of Jesus’ earthly ministry, He thought of all of those around Him who needed mercy. The one thief hanging on the cross discerned who Jesus was. The one Thief asked for something supernatural. He asked for Jesus to rescue Him from judgment that he knew was coming.

Jesus assured him he would see Him in the next life I a place called PARADISE. This was the holding place in the core of the earth, also referred to as Abraham’s bosom. Jesus told the man that His sins were forgiven in the bold proclamation that only the Son of God could give. Jesus rescued the man who deserved the punishment of eternal damnation.

Woman, behold your son: behold your mother (John 19:26-27).

The Son of God, experiencing the most excruciating pain imaginable, looked down from the cross and saw His mother… weeping in an agony of pain, not knowing why this had happened and what the future would hold, was ministered to by her Son hanging there for the sins of the whole world.

In this very place of suffering, He looked at John in the eyes, and told him to care for His Mother. He looked at His Mother and told her that John would now see after her.

My God, My God, why have you forsaken me, (Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34).

For the first time of all eternity. At this particular moment. Jesus was separated from His Father. Never had this happened before. Jesus had become sin for us. This was a decision that Jesus had to make; to become the sacrifice for Adam’s high treason. Tp take our place in death.

2 Corinthians 5:21

21 For He (Father) hath made Him (Jesus)to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.

I thirst (John 19:28).

Josephus said there was 6,000 crucifixions the same year Jesus was crucified. It was a normal thing for those who lived in Rome to see the roads that led to the City lined with political criminals and those who had committed horrific crimes hang for all to see.

There was something different about THIS particular Crucifixion. Jesus didn’t deserve the punishment of death. He never committed any crime or broke any law, yet He suffered unto death.

Jesus felt the Roman scourges of 39 blows to His body that tore, lacerated, & punctured His skin. He felt the Crown of Thorns penetrate His entire Head. The thorns were hammered into His skull.

After carrying the cross, dragging the cross, and falling to the dirt, He was totally drained of strength. In His human frailty, in His weakest state, He cried out for something to drink. The Savior of the world asking for something to drink. In all of His suffering, He thought of you and me.

It is finished (John 19:30).

Matthew 27:51

51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

Hebrews 7:27

27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did

once, when he offered up himself.

The price has been paid, the victory won.

He’s given us the way, in Jesus, its done!

Through the shed Blood of Jesus Christ, the Old Covenant was fulfilled! Jesus proclaimed the victory. No more sacrifice of animals to cover the sins of the people. Jesus died ONCE for the remission (total removal) of Adam’s treason! Jesus broke the curse!

Father, into your hands I commit my spirit (Luke 23:46).

The Prince of Peace was hanging on the cross for the sins of the whole world. The sweating of blood in the garden was not because of fear of what they would do to Him in His Body, but, the unknown of what it was going to be like to be separated from His Father. That was the agony that caused Him to sweat beads of blood. That is why He wanted His closest friends to stay up with Him and pray for awhile.

In the course of all Jesus experienced; His final saying on the cross was to His Father, “ I am Yours…”

We too should say to Our Heavenly Father, “I am Yours.”

We too should bow at His feet.

If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, now is the time!

Pray this prayer from your heart:

Father, I believe in my heart that Jesus Christ is Your Son and that He was crucified, buried, and resurrected, to pay the price in full so I can live victoriously over sin, sickness, and poverty (both spiritual and natural), and spiritual death.

Jesus, I confess You as my Savior and Lord.

I Thank You that I am saved. I now become a new creation and I become righteous in You. Old things have passed away and all things become new (see 2 Corinthians 5:17, 21).

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for empowering me with Your Spirit so I can live an overcoming, abundant life and become a bold witness of You!

Today my new life begins in You, Lord Jesus. Thank You!
