Renewing the Mind

By David P. Ward

Joshua 1:8

King James Version (KJV)

8This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Psalm 1:3

3And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

Proverbs 4:20-23

20My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.

21Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.

22For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.

23Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

1. There are 4 aspects in renewing the mind to God’s Word:

1) Meditation (Joshua 1:8)

2) Speaking, muttering the Word (Joshua 1:8, Psalm 91:1-2)

a. What is the opposite of meditating? The opposite of meditating on the Word of God is worrying. The result of worry is speaking murmurings; constantly complaining about the circumstances. (1 Peter 5:7)

3) Cast down imaginations by paralyzing every thought that is contrary to the Word of God. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)

4) Be a doer of the Word and not a hearer only. Act on the Word (corresponding actions. (James 1:22)

Colossians 3:10

10And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

Colossians 3:10

Amplified Bible (AMP)

10And have clothed yourselves with the new [spiritual self], which is [ever in the process of being] renewed and remolded into [fuller and more perfect knowledge upon] knowledge after the image (the likeness) of Him Who created it.

a. The original Greek says, “knowledge upon knowledge…” This is in perfect aorist tense, meaning constantly. We are to never stop growing. The renewing of the mind will never end.

Ephesians 4:23

King James Version (KJV)

23And be renewed in the spirit pneuma(attitude) of your mind;

Ephesians 4:23

The Message (MSG)

20-24But that's no life for you. You learned Christ! My assumption is that you have paid careful attention to him, been well instructed in the truth precisely as we have it in Jesus. Since, then, we do not have the excuse of ignorance, everything—and I do mean everything—connected with that old way of life has to go. It's rotten through and through. Get rid of it! And then take on an entirely new way of life—a God-fashioned life, a life renewed from the inside and working itself into your conduct as God accurately reproduces his character in you.

a. The renewing of the mind is critical for the serious disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ.

b. The renewing of the mind is not automatic for the believer.

c. There must be a constant saturation of God’s Word for the believer.

d. The mind is a constant battlefield for the believer until he renews his mind to the Word of God.

e. Satan tries to use the voice of the flesh, the circumstances of life, and thoughts that are contrary to the written Word of God to confuse the Believer into thinking that what God’s Word says is not true.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5

King James Version (KJV)

3For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:

4(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

5Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Thoughts, imaginations, & strongholds

1. In the study of renewing the mind to the Word of God, the above verses will help us understand how Satan uses doubt, unbelief, imaginations, and wrong thinking to work against the believer.

2. If we acknowledge the process of how we get the principles of God’s Word into our heart and not just in our head, we see how everything starts with a thought, becomes an imagination, then later a stronghold .

a. This process works for the believer and the unbeliever.

3. Renewing the mind starts with right thinking. Right thinking produces right believing.

4. Wrong thinking produces wrong believing.

5. Thoughts become imaginations, imaginations become strongholds.

6. It is not enough just to read the Word of God.

7. It is through the Word and by the Spirit of God that we are renewed in our minds.

8. Reasoning was never a factor in Adam until he committed high treason.

9. Reasoning is a result of the curse.

10. The human spirit was meant to work with the soul in harmony. The recreated human spirit wants to dominate, to ascend to its rightful position, but the mind must be renewed.

a. mind renewal enables the recreated human spirit to dominate over the flesh/the 5 physical senses.

b. The senses are to be controlled by the recreated human spirit. This can only happen by the renewing of the mind.

2 Corinthians 10:5 “…bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ…”

a. Bringing into captivity= to handcuff, to determine immobile, to paralyze

b. to the obedience of Christ= thinking that is in line with God’s Word

c. We are not to allow the voice of our senses to dominate us. The body is not to be in control over the Believer. To be BODY RULED is to be CARNAL.

d. CARNAL Believers limit themselves to the milk of the Word. (1 Corinthians 3:1-3)

Isaiah 26:3

King James Version (KJV)

3Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

Proverbs 23:7

King James Version (KJV)

7For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

Proverbs 23:7

Amplified Bible (AMP)

7For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…”

Philippians 4:8

King James Version (KJV)

8Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

a. Satan’s goal is to keep the believer’s mind on the cares of this world to cause worry and anxiety.

b. A sound mind is a sober mind. A sober mind is one who keeps a real mental attitude.

c. Remember, the soul of man is his mind, will, emotions, and intellect.

d. The mind is the throne to your spirit.

Ephesians 3:20

King James Version (KJV)

20Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

Mark 11:23-24

King James Version (KJV)

23For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

24Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire (imagine), when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

a. Jesus said the God kind of faith is released when we speak to the mountain. Notice in verse 24 He says, “the things we desire, when we pray…” The word DESIRE is out word, IMAGINE.

b. The Bible has a lot to say about our thinking.

11. Worry is meditating on the lies of the devil.

James 1:21-23

The Message (MSG)

Act on What You Hear

19-21Post this at all the intersections, dear friends: Lead with your ears, follow up with your tongue, and let anger straggle along in the rear. God's righteousness doesn't grow from human anger. So throw all spoiled virtue and cancerous evil in the garbage. In simple humility, let our gardener, God, landscape you with the Word, making a salvation-garden of your life.

a. King James says, “receive with meekness (a teachable spirit) the engrafted Word which is able to save your souls…” (renew your mind).

12. When situations arise, instead of acting out of an unrenewed mind, or responding out of our senses, we speak the Word of God.

a. Proverbs for say, “incline thine ear unto His sayings, let them not depart from your eyes…: (meditating on the Word)

b. The devil is not allowed free reign in your mind.

c. Thoughts of evil, lust, jealousy , and envy are not to have a playground in your mind, will, or emotions. You can have victory over your thoughts! The Bible says so!

d. The Psalmist said, “He restoreth my soul…” (renews my mind). The word restoreth in the Hebrew denotes the restoration of an old piece of wood furniture that was in need of putting back to its original state.

13. Romans 8:16 speaks of the CARNAL MIND being in enmity against God.

1 Corinthians 2:14

King James Version (KJV)

14But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

2 Corinthians 4:16

King James Version (KJV)

16For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

Corinthians 4:16

Amplified Bible (AMP)

16Therefore we do not become discouraged (utterly spiritless, exhausted, and wearied out through fear). Though our outer man is [progressively] decaying and wasting away, yet our inner self is being [progressively] renewed day after day.
